Irina Catherine Irvine, ecology & evolutionary biology graduate student, has received a Mildred E. Mathias Graduate Student Research Grant from the UC Natural Reserve System. The highly competitive grant – only 18 applications from seven UC campuses received awards – supports research at the reserves. The award acknowledges the excellence of recipients’ research proposals, which were reviewed by campus and systemwide committees. Irvine’s research will take place at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve, focusing on the influence of nitrogen enrichment on the composition and functioning of microbial communities in California salt marshes.
