Steve Allison wins Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence
May 26, 2009
Colleagues,
I am proud to announce that Steve Allison of the Department of
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology has received the 2008-09 Golden
Apple Award for Teaching Excellence in Biological Sciences. Steve has
just begun his teaching career but has done so on an exceptionally
high note. As his first teaching assignment, he developed an upper
division class in Terrestrial Ecosystems Ecology (Bio Sci 118). In
this class, Steve managed to span the entire gamut of the field,
presenting both mathematical theory and field trips in the same class!
The students responded very positively to his teaching style and
development of concepts in the field, in spite of the fact that some
students expected not to be enthusiastic about this topic. Steve was
described by students as "engaging, articulate and knowledgeable on
the subject." His students gave Steve an overall grade of 3.88 on a 4
point scale, as an instructor for his class.
Please join me in congratulating Steve for receiving this exceptional honor.
