The School of Biological Sciences is very pleased to announce that
our own faculty member Tony James (Professor, Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry) is being honored this year with a UCI Medal. First
awarded in 1984 to founding UC Irvine Chancellor Daniel G. Aldrich
Jr., the UCI Medal is the university's highest honor. This year's
Medalists join a select group comprised of forward-thinking community
leaders, innovative faculty and stellar alumni who have made a
profound difference for UC Irvine's future. Tony is a Distinguished
Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, and he earned both
his bachelor's and doctorate degrees in our School as well. An
internationally known biologist, he leads a global effort to develop
new methods of controlling dengue fever. His research interests
include the molecular biology of insect vectors of disease, the
genetics of vector competence, malaria and dengue fever. In 2006, he
was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and in 1994 he was
named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science. Tony has also received the UCI Alumni Association's Lauds &
Laurels Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2004. I am pleased to see our
faculty being recognized at the highest level on our
campus. Congratulations again, Tony!
I am also pleased to announce that two additional Biological Sciences
faculty members were honored this year by the Academic Senate. The
Scholarly Awards and Honors Committee solicits nominations each year
for 7 distinctive awards that recognize outstanding teaching,
research and service on the UCI campus. This year, Marcelo Wood
(Assistant Professor, Neurobiology and Behavior) has been awarded the
Academic Senate's Distinguished Assistant Professor Award for
Teaching. Marcelo has taught many unique and highly interactive
courses since coming to UCI in 2006 with an outstanding evaluation
mean of 3.83. He is praised for not only his amazing ability to
teach the fundamentals, but also his ability to inspire students to
think critically.
In addition, Tim Bradley (Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary
Biology) has been awarded the Daniel G. Aldrich Distinguished
University Service Award. . Tim has made numerous contributions to
UC and UCI over the last 20 years. He has been active in the UC
Reserve System for 20 years, most recently becoming Campus Director
in 2001, and has served as an advisor to UCI Environmental Health and
Safety. He served as Chair of the Academic Senate in
addition. Within the School, he has served on the Crystal Cove
Advisory Committee, the Anza Borrego Advisory Committee, the Advisory
Committee to the Associate Dean for Research, and the Upper Level
Writing Review Committee.
These are terrific achievements that garner widespread recognition
not only for these individuals, but also reflect well on the
School. Please join me in send our congratulations to Tony, Marcelo and Tim!
