To honor Barbara's life and work , the School of Biological Sciences has established the Barbara K. Burgess Memorial Fund, which will provide an award for a promising young postdoctoral fellow. This will serve to acknowledge Barbara's concerns about post-docs, it will ensure that her name remains associated with the School in perpetuity, and it will be a fitting tribute to an outstanding scientist, educator and human being, who worked so selflessly on our behalf, and whose efforts have led to countless benefits for us all. Past recipients of this award have been Dr. Anja Rosengarth, Dr. Latesh Lad and Dr. Tomas Dolezal. This year's awardee is Suzanne Bohlson.
Barbara excelled in all areas of her life , and at UCI she brought great distinction to the School through her outstanding scholarship. As a faculty member in the School of Biological Sciences, Barbara had enormous impact as a role model and mentor in teaching and esearch. Her research drew postdoctoral researchers from all over the world to work in her lab. Among the many issues that Barbara cared greatly about was the quality of life of postdoctoral fellows here in Irvine where living expenses can be high for young professionals, especially those with families.
To honor Barbara ' s life and work, and to acknowledge the accomplishments of outstanding postdoctoral fellows in Barbara's area of expertise, please make a donation to the Barbara K. Burgess Memorial Fund (see instructions at bottom of the page). The Fund has reached $20,000, but we really need your continued contributions to enable the fund to be capable of a significant annual pay-out.
