Dr. Edward Wagner
passed unexpectedly in his sleep on January 21, 2006, the very year he
was due to retire. In honor of his life long commitment to virus research,
teaching, web design and textbook authorship, the School of Biological
Sciences, Center for Virus Research and the Department of Molecular Biology
and Biochemistry will establish a memorial fund to support a visiting
lectureship in Dr. Wagner's name. This lectureship will be especially
aimed at the development and involvement of students.
Dr. Ed Wagner first joined the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
in 1970 and directly contributed to the growth of the department and the
school. His research focus has long been to understand the gene expression
and latency of human herpes simplex virus. He has had a long and productive
career in this field, establishing an international stature amongst his
peers. He has also long taught one of the largest undergraduate courses
in virology in the Nation, designed an award winning web site on virology
and co-authored a prominent textbook "Basic Virology" on this
topic. Dr. Wagner was the founding faculty of a program in virology that
led directly to the development of the Center for Virus Research. His
strong voice and firm views on all issues related to the University matters
will be missed.
The Edward K. Wagner Memorial Fund

Biological Sciences is establishing the Edward K. Wagner Memorial Fund.
The fund will create a lecutureship with an aim toward the development
