Grover
Stephens passed away on June 17, 2003. He was 78 years
old. He is survived by his wife, Ann Doyle Stephens,
and two sons, Peter W. Stephens and John D. Stephens.
He also had another son, Joseph H. Stephens, whom he
outlived.

Dr. Stephens was one of the
founding faculty of the School of Biological Sciences
and was the first Chair of the Department of Developmental
and Cell Biology. He eventually continued his research
and teaching in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary
Biology. He served the School and campus in many ways,
including a term as Dean of the School in the 1980s.
He became an emeritus faculty member in 1991. He was
an excellent and committed teacher, and a good friend
to many. He remained committed to UCI and active in
the School right up to the end.

| As recently as June 3rd, Dr. Stephens
participated in the School’s annual Honors Convocation.
As in the past, he presented two outstanding undergraduate
research students with the Joseph H. Stephens Memorial
Prize in Ecology and Molecular Biology. These awards
were established by Dr. Stephens in honor of his son. |

The Grover
C. Stephens Memorial Fund
The School of Biological Sciences has established
the Grover C. Stephens Memorial Fund to honor Grover's
life and work.
This fund will be used to endow the Grover C. Stephens
Memorial Fellowship, to be awarded annually to a graduate
student in the department of Ecology & Evolutionary
Biology in the School of Biological Sciences, with
preference going to a student working in comparative/evolutionary
physiology.
