Dr. Paul H. Silverman passed away on July 15, 2004. He is
survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy J. Silverman, children Daniel
J. Silverman, Claire S. Clark, and five grandchildren.
Dr. Silverman’s acclaimed work and career spanned more than
five decades and he held leadership positions in some of the world’s
most prestigious universities, research centers and scientific
companies. A native of Minneapolis, he earned degrees in parasitology,
immunology and genetics. Dr. Silverman created the nation’s first human
genome center in 1987 and was the proud owner of a license plate that
read “Genome”. A member of UCI’s Department of Developmental and Cell
Biology, Dr. Silverman was passionate about two issues. First, that
improved communication is needed between scientists and the public to
foster a better understanding of the importance of science and its role
in society. Second, he believed in the great potential of stem cell
research and spoke publicly about its promise for treating many
untreatable chronic diseases.
Paul Silverman, recognized as a Renaissance man, was a
brilliant scientist, administrator, and friend. He will be missed
greatly.
The Paul H. Silverman Memorial Fund
To honor his life, work and belief in stem cell research, the
School of Biological Sciences plans to establish the Paul H. Silverman
Memorial Fund.
This fund will be used to endow the proposed Paul H. Silverman
Memorial
Fellowship to be awarded annually to a graduate or post-doctoral fellow
working on stem cell research.
Friends and colleagues who would like to honor Paul by
contributing to the Paul H. Silverman Memorial Fund may send
contributions to help establish the endowment, by credit card or check
(See below).
In addition, the Interdisciplinary Center for the Scientific
Study of Ethics and Morality, of which Paul was active member, will
also be honoring Paul’s memory by presenting each year The Paul H.
Silverman Award, to a scholar or scholarly entity for important work in
the field of science and ethics.
