| Description: |
|
In recent years, many biologists have switched from studying phenomena one at a time to gathering huge sets of data from which insight is to be extracted collectively. With this change has come a re-envisioning of life in terms of “networks” and “complex systems” from which sophisticated behaviors “emerge”. An exciting new field, Systems Biology, has taken form around this issue, propelled by an interdisciplinary coalition of experimental biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers and physicists, the likes of which modern science has never before seen. And yet, ironically, the most profound and lasting contribution of Systems Biology may be its re-invigoration of old lines of biological inquiry that were thought to have been discredited, or at least outmoded. I will discuss how the return of “strategic” thinking into the questions we ask about life is changing the worlds of both science and medicine. Reservations are required. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available free of charge at the Beckman Center.
