Dear New Transfer Bio Sci Anteater,

Congratulations on being accepted to UCI and welcome to the School of Biological Sciences!  We know you are embarking on an exciting academic adventure and we are glad to help you begin this journey.

The Bio Sci Student Affairs Office will be assisting all of our students with vital tasks such as registration, course planning, and scheduling for Fall quarter.  We hope that the following information will make this process easier, more successful, and perhaps fun, as well.  In addition to the information that follows, be sure to access the New Student Checklist at http://www.newstudents.uci.edu.  The New Student Checklist will guide you in making a smooth transition to UCI.

As a Bio Sci major, there are four key steps you must do to ensure a great Fall quarter:

  1. Activate your UCI Net ID (at http://activate.uci.edu )
  2. Take Placement Test(s) if necessary
*Please see details regarding placement tests below.
  3. Attend Advising
**Please see information below regarding signing up for an advising session.
  4. Pay Fees by September 15 th, 2008 at 4:30 p.m.

* Placement Test

Most new transfer students will not need to take any placement tests. If you have not taken calculus at your previous institution, you will need to sign up for either the Mathematical Analysis Placement Test or the Precalculus Placement Test, depending on your level of math achievement. It is extremely important that you take your placement tests as soon as possible. The Academic Testing Center website (at http://www.testingcenter.uci.edu) will provide you with full details on registration for the tests. Please click on the link “here” under the “Attention incoming Freshmen” paragraph at the top of the page. Tests must be completed before you attend an academic advising session and before you register for courses. A lack of test results will complicate academic advising and registration.

**Advising Sessions
New transfer students must attend an advising session to enroll in courses for Fall 2008.
Please follow these steps to reserve your place at an advising session:

  1. Fax or mail a copy of your transcripts from all institutions you have attended (unofficial is fine) to the Biological Sciences Student Affairs Office Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8am-12pm and 1pm-4:30pm. (Fax: 949-824-4697, Address: 231 Steinhaus Hall, UCI, Irvine, CA 92697-1460)
  2. If you have completed the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC), it is important for you to fax verification of this information to us with your transcripts.
  3. Once your transcripts arrive in our office, you can call and make an appointment for an advising session. Please call 949-824-5318 to reserve a seat at a Transfer Advising Session.

In preparation for the academic advising sessions an academic counselor will review your transcripts, evaluate your course work as it applies to our degree requirements, and prepare a Fall schedule for you. For this reason, it is imperative that you send our office all transcripts from your previous school(s). The advising sessions will last approximately three hours and you will be enrolling in your Fall courses during this session.

If you arrive late to the advising session, we WILL NOT be able to accommodate you.

Since we have a limited number of spaces, we strongly encourage you to call early for your appointment. If you wait until the last few weeks before the enrollment deadline, we may not be able to see you before the September 15 th registration deadline.

 **Final Notes**

-For the purposes of monitoring on-line enrollment in classes, we have temporarily placed a hold on your registration. Please disregard this hold, as it is simply an administrative tool. We will remove the hold when you come to an advising session.

-Visit www.transfercounseling.uci.edu for important information for new transfer students.

We look forward to meeting you this summer. If you should have any questions please feel free to call our office at (949) 824-5318.
