A wide variety of housing options exist for all UCI students, including
both on and off campus residences. Of particular note, however,
to Biological Sciences majors is our Theme House, Bio Sci Haus,
located in Arroyo Vista. Additional housing information can be
found at http://www.housing.uci.edu/
BIO SCI HAUS
The Bio Sci Haus exposes residents to both the unity and diversity
among students in the biological sciences. Residents are provided
with an intellectual and social environment in which they can share
experiences and explore relevant biological issues. Residents are
also provided academic guidance including:
- Information relevant
to being a successful student in the Biological Sciences major at
UCI
- Individual course scheduling and academic planning
- Career and professional information.
To create the above environment, Bio Sci Haus offers a range of
activities including:
- Visits by the Dean
and Associate Dean throughout the year help keep residents
informed of the current and future plans for the School of Biological
Sciences and the undergraduate curriculum and education.
- Symposiums are
offered by faculty and graduate students from UCI and other campuses
and affiliates. The purpose of these symposiums will be to introduce
students to the topics about which the faculty/graduate students
teach or in which they are doing research. A minimum of one faculty/graduate
student visit per quarter will be provided.
- Academic/Career
Advising takes place each quarter. Prior to the students' enrollment
for each quarter, academic counselors will be available at the Haus
to provide individual academic counseling and course planning for
all students who sign up for this opportunity. The residents will
be involved in the annual Biological Sciences Alumni Career Night
and can learn about possible career areas related to their degree. Visits from Bio Sci alumni throughout the year provide more intimate
and realistic information on career choices.
Student Residents
While the house is designed to attract students majoring in the
Biological Sciences, students demonstrating a genuine interest in
studying biology are welcomed and encouraged to become residents
(although Biological Sciences majors will have first priority).
Residents must be in good academic standing and have indicated (on
their application) a genuine interest in participating and contributing
to the goals and activities of the Bio Sci Haus. Returning residents
are welcome with a past record of active participation in the Haus
the previous year. Residents of the Haus are required to participate
in weekly Bio Sci Haus resident meetings and Haus events, have appropriate
behavior related to the Arroyo Vista Housing rules and regulations,
and show mutual respect and support of fellow Bio Sci Haus residents.
House Assistants
The House Assistant is a Biological Sciences major in good
academic standing. The HA should have past experience with a program/activity/organization
in the School of Biological Sciences and/or the UCI campus. The
responsibilities of the House Assistant is to keep the house's sponsors
informed of residents' needs, to make arrangements for speakers
for events at the house, and to keep the residents informed of all
upcoming School events and opportunities.
The Faculty sponsor is Dr. Michael Leon, Associate Dean for Undergraduate
Affairs and the Non-faculty sponsor is Carolyn Willmann,
Co-Director, Bio Sci Student Affairs Office (ccwillma@uci.edu)
