Bio 199 Enrollment Procedures & Deadlines

1.             Students must comply with all of the Bio. 199 Research Enrollment Procedures and program requirements.

2.             Enroll by obtaining faculty sponsor  signature on add card if Bio. 199 Research is in one of the following depts:  Ecology & Evolutionary Bio.,  Developmental and Cell Bio.,  Molecular Bio.  & Biochemistry, Neurobiology & Behavior, Anatomy & Neurobio., Microbio & Molecular Genetics, Biological Chemistry, and Physiology & Biophysics.  Submit add card to the Registrar.  Students must also enroll in the corresponding Bio. 194 seminar listed by matching title and instructor name in the Schedule of Classes if faculty is in one of the above departments.

3.             For students conducting Bio. 199 with a faculty sponsor listed in one of the biomedical research sections in the Schedule of Classes---you must obtain Dr. Leon's signature on the add card as the instructor.  Go to SH231 for Dr. Leon's signature. Research abstract must be on file to obtain signature. *all of the biomedical 199 courses have Dr. Leon listed as the instructor of record in the Schedule of Classes.

4.              Research Abstract Deadline submission is the second Friday of the quarter..  The abstract must  be signed by faculty sponsor and student.  Submit to SH231. The Abstract is submitted during the first quarter of research and is valid for one year (July - June).  The Abstract form is on line at:   https://www.bio.uci.edu/Bio199/

You will be prompted to supply your UCINetID and password to log into the system.

*Make sure abstract is printed, signed and submitted to SH231 by deadline

5.              Failure to submit abstract  will result in the assignment of In Progress for the quarter grade.

6.            MANDATORY - BIO. 194 SAFETY COURSE.  All Bio199 students must have passed, the Bio. 194S, Safety and Ethics for Research course prior to enrolling in the research.   Failure to comply will result in a.drop from the Bio. 199 course.

7.             Students conducting research directly with patients or other human subjects must comply with special enrollment procedures.  For research conducted at UCIMC, UCI Medical Plaza, or UCI Family Health Center, a clinical enrollment packet with directions is  available in SH231 Information and requirements for research at other clinical facilities are  also available in SH231.

8.             The Bio. 199 Quarterly Summary report is due on Monday of the tenth week EACH quarter.  The Summary Report form  is on line at the same web site listed in #4 above and can be submitted to Dr. Leon, Assoc. Dean,  electronically.  Failure to submit will result in the assignment of In Progress for the quarter grade.

9.             PLEASE NOTE  FOR UNIVERSITY EXTENSION: students enrolling in Bio 199 through University Extension must comply with all requirements.  Students must demonstrate proof of health insurance.

10.         GRADES: Immediately check grades when they are available at the end of each quarter. Students who receive an In Progress, assigned by Dr. Leon, or a NR (no report) must immediately take the appropriate action.  The NR will turn to an F at the end of the following quarter.  If the IP  was assigned because the abstract or summary report was not submitted, the missing document/s must be submitted by the end of the second week of the following quarter.  The student is responsible to fill out the grade change report that will be processed.

11.           Waiver and Release of Liability and Acknowledgement of the Assumption of Risk Form must be signed by all students conducting a Bio. 199 Research course.  The form can be obtained in Steinhaus Hall 231 and must be submitted with the signed abstract to the Bio. Sciences Student Affairs Office, SH231.  Failure to do so will result in an In Progress grade for the quarter.
