The Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), seeks an individual with specialized training and skills to fulfill the role of Director of Education and Outreach.
The CNLM was established by the UC Regents in 1983 with Dr. James McGaugh as the Founding Director. The CNLM is the first research institute in the world dedicated exclusively to the multidisciplinary study of learning and memory and has been a global leader in neuroscience research and education for over thirty give years. Center researchers have backgrounds and credentials in a variety of research disciplines (biology, psychology, chemistry, anatomy, pharmacology, physics, mathematics, philosophy, sociology, and cognitive science) that influence their approaches to the study of learning and memory. Work at the CNLM has direct impact on real world applications such as education, technology, and brain health. In its thirty-five-year history, the CNLM has educated hundreds of graduate and postdoctoral researchers and thousands of undergraduate students. The CNLM has a dedicated NIH-funded Training Program in Learning and Memory that is additionally supplemented by a private endowment. The CNLM also has a very active community education program that strives to increase science awareness and understanding, as well as education the next generation of leaders in neuroscience. Among the CNLM’s community education programs are the Brain Explorer Academy (8-week introductory program for elementary and middle school children during the academic year), Brain Camp (immersive 2-week full-time summer program for middle and high school students), as well as the CNLM Ambassador Program, which involves a group of 70 trainees who design, implement, and evaluate outcomes for outreach and educational efforts throughout the year, on-campus and off-campus.
Under the direction of the CNLM Director and Associate Director, the incumbent will supervise all educational and outreach programs for the Center, including serving as the training coordinator for the NIH-funded T32 grant. The incumbent will organize all CNLM educational and outreach events as well as all aspects of CNLM engagement including activities designed to stimulate and steward community philanthropy. The incumbent will apply to grants and other funding opportunities to support various Center educational initiatives and will serve as a collaborator and point of contact for Center faculty on outreach-based projects or outreach components of projects. The incumbent will serve as the executive director for all of the Center’s conferences and symposia including the triennial International Conference on Learning and Memory (LEARNMEM).
Responsibilities include: instructional design and implementation of all outreach and community education activities; grant preparation and project management for education-related projects, development of educational materials and programs, supervising staff, students and volunteers engaged in CNLM activities, creating and maintaining a community outreach network of organizations and contacts including teachers, administrators, policymakers, and other key community leaders, and development of an overall strategy to grow the CNLM’s reach and impact on the Orange County community.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience or related field, plus 2-3 additional years of pedagogical training, formal or informal science education, or engagement / outreach experience. Required skills include proficiency with computer software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, proficient use of design tools including Adobe Creative Suite, proficient use of various media solutions including videoconferencing, livestream, video editing, and multimedia presentations, and exceptional communication and public speaking skills.
Significant experience in education leadership, program design and successful implementation, management of small and large teams, event and conference management, grant writing, and track record of securing funding to support educational efforts is required. Salary is commensurate with relevant experience and track record.
