DESCRIPTION:Event Description\n\n\n\nA night of learning\, entertainment\, and networking for Orange County underrepresented minority high school students. With the help of underrepresented minority undergraduate level\, graduate level\, Junior Staff and Faculty of UC Irvine\, we hope to show your students a tangible path to a career in STEM-related fields. Our first annual “Meet a Scientist/Engineer Night” is designed to introduce high school students to connections that can help them picture themselves in STEM careers and research. From learning about life as an STEM-majored undergraduate\, to the path forward as a URM entering graduate or professional school\, “Meet A Scientist/Engineer Night” is a one-stop shop for all the questions underrepresented students could think of and even some they never thought to ask! Afterwards\, enjoy a donut and fruit\, while talking to the Dean\, other Dunlop School students and your professors. \n\n\n\nAttendance for this event is limited\, so register now by clicking the link. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Sana Khan is an accomplished radiologist\, scientist\, teacher\, and entrepreneur. \n\n\n\nHe attended UC Irvine for his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences then medical school at UCLA where he graduated as a Dean’s Scholar with M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in Anatomy and Clinical Neurophysiology. \n\n\n\nDr. Khan owns imaging centers throughout California but also continues to be a prolific researcher with current projects at UCSD and USC. He has received numerous awards for his medical accomplishments such as U.S. Congressional Medal of Distinction\, 2008 for Advancement of Medical Science (Radiology) and in 2013 induction into the President’s Circle of the Radiological Society of North America for contribution to research in Radiology. \n\n\n\nIn addition to his academic and research accomplishments\, Dr. Khan is also a serial entrepreneur having built diagnostic centers nationally and garnered such awards as “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year\, 2008 Finalist in California” and “Keys to the City of Houston” from Mayor Bill White\, for financial and academic contributions to the city. \n\n\n\nDr. Khan resides in Orange County\, California with his wife Safura and 4 children. \n\n\n\nCurrently Dr. Khan is:Sana U. Nguyen\, M.D.\, FACEP\, received his bachelor’s from the UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences in 1982 and his medical education from the UCI School of Medicine in 1987. Since leaving UCI\, Dr. Nguyen has served as Chief of Staff and ER Director at Redlands Community Hospital\, as well as the Medical Director for the Redlands Fire Department\, Loma Linda Fire Department\, the San Manuel Fire Department and the Paramedic Program at Crafton Hills College. He is currently the Medical Director at Redlands-Yucaipa Medical Group. During his free time\, he enjoys reading and playing tennis.

In 2021\, she joined Visionary Ventures as a Principal where she identifies investment opportunities\, conducts due diligence\, and provides strategic guidance to Visionary’s portfolio companies. Prior to joining Visionary\, Dr. Christie was Director\, Eye Care Research at Allergan/AbbVie. She received her Bachelor of Science from McGill University (Montreal\, Canada) and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from University of Toronto. SUMMARY:Minority Science Programs Annual Symposium 2021
DESCRIPTION:Program Leaders \n\n\n\nDr. Luis Mota-Bravo and Dr. Marlene de la Cruz. \n\n\n\nThe MSP’s mission is to increase the participation of individuals from underrepresented groups in biomedical research careers. The MSP’s long-term vision is to diversify the biomedical research workforce by providing comprehensive training to mentor and prepare students from underrepresented groups to become independent scientific investigators and faculty role models and mentors to the next generation of scientists. MSP programs are supported by federal training grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Biological Sciences Office of the Dean. In the last ten years\, MSP has supported over 300 undergraduate students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research. MSP students all go through laboratory skills training\, and then engage in mentored research. They are also trained in scientific communication and present their work at the annual symposium as well as national conferences. \n\n\n\nMore than 60 students will present their independent research projects at the MSP symposium. McGaugh Chair in Neurobiology of Learning and MemoryProfessor\, Neurobiology and BehaviorDirector\, Facility for Imaging and Brain Research (FIBRE)Director\, Campus Center for Neuroimaging (CCNI)UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences \n\n\n\nWhy Does Our Memory Decline With Age\n\n\n\n(and can we do anything about it)?\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \n\n\n\nMemory complaints are the most common cognitive concern of individuals as they age\, and it’s no wonder people are worried about it. Problems with memory are a hallmark feature of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. That being said\, occasional memory lapses are normal\, even when we’re young. However\, lapses in memory become more common as we age\, even when there are no clinical signs of dementia. \n\n\n\nIn his lecture\, Professor Stark will cover his laboratory’s research into these age-related changes and how we can use sophisticated brain imaging and behavioral techniques to study the effects of aging on our memory. A question naturally arises from this work: Can we do anything to slow or reverse these changes? In the second part of his presentation\, Professor Stark will describe recent efforts made in his lab to adapt rodent studies on “environmental enrichment” to humans. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 30\, 2019\, 4:00 PMCrystal Cove Auditorium\, UC Irvine Student Center\n\n\n\nReception to follow the Lecture at 5:00 PM\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecently the zebrafish\, a small freshwater fish commonly found in your home aquarium\, has emerged as a powerful new gene discovery and disease model system. Much of what we know about human genes and their role in health and disease has come from research using small animals as model systems. This is possible because two-thirds or more of our genes are similar in structure and function to genes in a fly or a fish. Professor Schilling will discuss how his lab has used zebrafish to study musculoskeletal development\, including genetic causes of birth defects such as cleft palate and muscular dystrophy. He will also discuss how this work has led to insights into the basic biology of cartilage\, bone and tendon development. These include how cells choose to become one of these cell types and how defects in these processes can lead to disease states. SUMMARY:Dean's Distinguished Lecture: May 15\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Catching Your Breath:\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture \n\n\n\nEverytime you breathe in\, you inhale fungal spores. These spores are so tiny that they can travel on the wind for hundreds of miles. In fact\, it’s one way that fungi move around. Most spores won’t hurt you\, but some can cause a pneumonia-like disease called valley fever. Valley fever has recently become a “silent epidemic” in Central California\,  Arizona\, and other areas with hot and dry climates. Could climate change help valley fever fungi move to new places like Southern California? We are studying the link between valley fever fungi and climate to answer this question. Moreover\, we are developing early warning systems in the U.S. and Mexico for valley fever.
