SUMMARY:Minority Science Programs Annual Symposium 2021
DESCRIPTION:Program Leaders \n\n\n\nDr. Luis Mota-Bravo and Dr. Marlene de la Cruz. \n\n\n\nThe MSP’s mission is to increase the participation of individuals from underrepresented groups in biomedical research careers. The MSP’s long-term vision is to diversify the biomedical research workforce by providing comprehensive training to mentor and prepare students from underrepresented groups to become independent scientific investigators and faculty role models and mentors to the next generation of scientists. MSP programs are supported by federal training grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Biological Sciences Office of the Dean. In the last ten years\, MSP has supported over 300 undergraduate students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research. MSP students all go through laboratory skills training\, and then engage in mentored research. They are also trained in scientific communication and present their work at the annual symposium as well as national conferences. \n\n\n\nMore than 60 students will present their independent research projects at the MSP symposium. Please join us to learn about their work and celebrate their accomplishments. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome! \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 925 3360 9859\n\n\n\nJoin meeting \n\n\n\nView symposium agenda

SUMMARY:Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 16\, 11:00am \n\n\n\nHerklotz Conference Center \n\n\n\n“Radiation- and chemotherapy-induced cognitive dysfunction: Causes\, consequences and treatments”\n\n\n\nCharles Limoli\, PhD \n\n\n\nProfessor of Radiation Oncology\, Department of Radiation Oncology\, UCI \n\n\n\nExposure of the CNS to treatments used to control the advance of cancer has been known to compromise cognitive function. Depending on disease state\, treatments specifics and socioeconomic factors\, cognitive outcomes vary in onset and severity. With increasing numbers of cancer patients surviving long-term\, cognitive health is becoming an increasing concern\, and to date\, no satisfactory treatments exist for ameliorating the progressive and often debilitating cognitive side effects caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This talk will cover the various mechanisms underlying treatment associated cognitive dysfunction and discuss the potential of using stem cell based strategies for the long-term treatment of this serious unmet medical need. \n\n\n\nAll colloquia are held in the Dale Melbourne Herklotz Conference Center\, CNLM. \n\n\n\nThe CNLM Colloquium Series is supported by an endowment from the Thomas Henry Curtis Funds.
