SUMMARY:Dean's Distinguished Lecture - Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:Our Individual Differences in Navigation Ability: Building a Cognitive Profile From Brain and Behavior\n\n\n\nJoin us for a talk with Associate Professor Elizabeth Chrastil \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences at UC Irvine invites you to attend the Spring 2026 Dean’s Distinguished Lecture\, featuring Associate Professor Elizabeth Chrastil on April 15\, 2026\, in the Crystal Cove Auditorium at the UC Irvine Student Center. \n\n\n\nNavigation is a central part of daily life. For some\, getting around is easy\, while others struggle. Some clinical populations\, such as those with Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\, display wandering behaviors and extensive disorientation. Working at the interface between immersive virtual reality and neuroimaging techniques\, my research uses these complementary approaches to inform questions about how we acquire and use spatial knowledge. In this talk\, I will discuss some of my recent work and current experiments that centers on how individuals differ in their spatial abilities\, which includes their exploration behavior and aspects of brain structure and function\, as well as sex and age. More broadly\, I will discuss how navigation lends insight into processes of human learning and memory. Further\, I will demonstrate how these techniques can be used to understand age-related changes in brain circuits and to identify those at greatest risk for AD. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details:\n\n\n\nTalk and Q&A: 4 to 5 p.m. \n\n\n\nReception: 5 to 6 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\n\n\nElizabeth Chrastil\, PhDElizabeth Chrastil is an associate professor in the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California\, Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences. She studies how the human brain supports navigation\, spatial memory and learning — research that helps explain how people orient themselves and move through complex environments. \n\n\n\nShow more\n\n\n\nElizabeth Chrastil\, PhDElizabeth Chrastil is an associate professor in the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California\, Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences. She studies how the human brain supports navigation\, spatial memory and learning — research that helps explain how people orient themselves and move through complex environments. Chrastil leads the Spatial Neuroscience Lab\, where her team combines immersive virtual reality environments with neuroimaging techniques such as functional MRI to investigate how the brain processes self-motion and environmental cues during navigation. Her work explores how different sources of information — such as landmarks\, body motion signals and decision-making processes — contribute to building mental maps of the world and learning new spaces. She earned her PhD in cognitive science from Brown University in 2012 and joined UC Irvine after faculty and research positions at institutions including the University of California\, Santa Barbara and Boston University. Chrastil’s research broadly examines how brain systems like the hippocampus and related networks support navigation and memory\, as well as why individuals differ in their navigational abilities. \n\n\n\nShow less\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.
