DESCRIPTION:“Metacognition and Study Strategies as Drivers of Student Success in Biology” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Adrienne Williams\, Assistant Teaching Professor\, Developmental & Cell Biology University of California\, Irvine \n\n\n\nWe want students who complete our classes to be able to describe important biological concepts and analyze scientific papers. We also want our students from all backgrounds to be successful in our courses. It is therefore important to know what study behaviors are actually associated with student success in biology classrooms so instructors can recommend and facilitate them. I will discuss my recent research projects on these topics. Metacognition describes both student knowledge and student behavior\, so I use this as a framework. Study strategies vary in popularity and students in different demographic groups vary in their choice of study strategies. I will show how study strategies relate to exam performance and retention in the major. Seminars are held on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m.\, in Natural Sciences II room 4201\, and live streamed via Zoom.  For seminar schedule click here. \n\nDr. Doina Tumbar\nProfessor\, Molecular Biology and Genetics\nCornell University\n\n“Epithelial skin stem cells in action: cell intrinsic and niche related mechanisms“\nAbstract:\nWe are studying basic cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate tissue stem cell activity\, focusing on adult epithelial stem cells in the skin. Using genetic and genomic approaches in mouse skin and comparing with human skin\, we are mapping the organization and regulation of hair follicle and epidermal stem cells and their interaction with the microenvironment or ‘niche’. We are analyzing genetic control of stem cell activation\, self-renewal\, and differentiation. Our general focus is on stem cell fate choice by epigenetic regulation\, transcription regulation via specific developmental transcription factors and RNA Pol II Pausing mechanisms\, and chromatin modifying factors. We are particularly fascinated by the role of epithelial stem cells in organizing cells in their surrounding environment\, such as melanocytes\, blood vessels\, nerves\, fat cells\, and fibroblast. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, October 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Crystal Cove Auditorium for our next Dean’s Distinguished Lecture with Professor Aimee Edinger\, VMD/PhD. \n\n\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nThe Edinger laboratory practices “translational cell biology\,” studying the flow of traffic on cellular highways with an eye to developing new medicines that can be used to treat lethal human diseases. This lecture will describe how natural compounds found in yeast and humans might be leveraged to set up roadblocks that kill drug-resistant tumor cells\, tame the obesity epidemic\, and help deliver next-generation DNA and RNA medicines. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Edinger’s journey began in San Diego with a childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. This goal took her to UC Davis\, where she engaged in undergraduate research and was soon captivated by the allure of scientific inquiry. Her fascination with research led her to pursue a dual veterinary/PhD program at the University of Pennsylvania. There\, she pecialized in both large and small animal medicine and completed a PhD thesis focused on HIV vaccine development. After deciding to pursue academic research\, Dr. Edinger undertook postdoctoral training in cancer biology in the esteemed lab of Craig Thompson at PENN. Throughout her nearly two decades at UCI\, Dr. Edinger has garnered recognition for her unwavering dedication to teaching and mentorship\, as well as for her groundbreaking research initiatives. Beyond her academic accolades\, she has displayed her innovative prowess by being named an inventor on seven patents. MartinProfessor\, Baylor College of Medicine & Texas Heart Institute\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHippo-signaling in Heart Regeneration\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nThe mammalian heart regenerates poorly and damage commonly leads to heart failure. The Hippo pathway is an evolutionarily conserved kinase cascade that regulates heart size during development and prevents adult mammalian cardiomyocyte regeneration by inhibiting the transcription cofactor Yap. Recent work indicates that deletion of the Hippo pathway component\, Salv\, in cardiomyocytes can reverse ischemic heart failure in a mouse model. High structure courses are designed to do just that as they prepare students to be actively engaged in the learning process via pre-class content acquisition and assessment\, in-class active learning and problem solving\, after-class review and assessment\, and frequent summative exams or quizzes. Significant literature has showed high structure courses in a variety of STEM disciplines to be efficacious as students show increased performance\, achievement gaps are narrowed or closed\, and students feel more belonging. This talk will synthesize research done over the past eight years from two different universities (UC Irvine and the Colorado School of Mines)\, three different disciplines (introductory biology\, anatomy and physiology\, and chemical engineering)\, and many different types of courses that served thousands of students. He has received numerous awards for his medical accomplishments such as U.S. Congressional Medal of Distinction\, 2008 for Advancement of Medical Science (Radiology) and in 2013 induction into the President’s Circle of the Radiological Society of North America for contribution to research in Radiology. \n\n\n\nIn addition to his academic and research accomplishments\, Dr. Khan is also a serial entrepreneur having built diagnostic centers nationally and garnered such awards as “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year\, 2008 Finalist in California” and “Keys to the City of Houston” from Mayor Bill White\, for financial and academic contributions to the city. \n\n\n\nDr. Khan resides in Orange County\, California with his wife Safura and 4 children. \n\n\n\nCurrently Dr. Khan is:Sana U. Seminars are held on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m.\, in Natural Sciences II room 4201\, and live streamed via Zoom.  For seminar schedule click here. \n\nDr. Xu Li\n \n\nAssistant Professor\, School of Life Sciences\, Westlake University\n \nAbstract:\n\nAdvances in high-throughput techniques has revolutionized biomedical research by creating avenues for integrated system-level approaches\, revealed mechanisms driving diseases and suggested novel targeted therapies. To effectively utilize proteomics data to guide in-depth mechanistic studies in development and diseases\, we developed several new techniques and algorithms\, such as ACUMEN-APEX2/TurboID and Minkowski distance-based algorithm MUSE\, to generate high-quality\, spatial- and tempol-precise protein-protein interaction networks in diseases models. Using these networks\, we studied the composition and reprogramming of key signaling networks in development and cancers such as acute T lymphoblastic leukemia. Nguyen\, M.D.\, FACEP\, received his bachelor’s from the UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences in 1982 and his medical education from the UCI School of Medicine in 1987. Since leaving UCI\, Dr. Nguyen has served as Chief of Staff and ER Director at Redlands Community Hospital\, as well as the Medical Director for the Redlands Fire Department\, Loma Linda Fire Department\, the San Manuel Fire Department and the Paramedic Program at Crafton Hills College. He is currently the Medical Director at Redlands-Yucaipa Medical Group. During his free time\, he enjoys reading and playing tennis.

According to the National Institute on Aging\, the number of Americans 65 and older with Alzheimer’s could rise from 5.8 million in 2020 to 13.8 million by 2050. SUMMARY:Live From Newport Pier - Featuring the So Cal Oil Spill Project
DESCRIPTION:In October 2021\, a pipeline leaked about 25\,000 gallons of oil into the ocean off the Orange County coast. The oil caked beaches and killed marine life\, and almost as soon as it happened two UC Irvine Ph.D. students\, Joana Tavares from the Department of Earth System Science and Melissa Brock from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, got to work. They headed to Newport Pier multiple times a week after the spill to sample the ocean water to gauge the health of the tiniest of marine organisms: phytoplankton. In a true multidisciplinary collaboration\, scientists from across UCI joined the effort to help with sample analysis and other research. \n\n\n\nNow\, join the UCI School of Physical Sciences for a livestream event that will see Joana and Melissa tune in from Newport Pier on Earth Day to discuss what they’ve learned about the spill since they started sampling\, and to answer questions about their science. They will be joined on Zoom by collaborators\, including Professor Adam Martiny of the Department of Earth System Science and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, Professor Katherine Mackey of the Department of Earth System Science\, and Professor Christopher Olivares of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. DESCRIPTION:Inclusive Leadership and Networking for Science and Engineering\n\n\n\n1:30 PM to 3:30 PM\n\n\n\nWomen scientists take on leadership roles every day\, in the classroom\, in their department or institution and in their professional organizations. This workshop module is designed to give participants the basic concepts of leadership\, describe recent research on leadership qualities that lead to success and failure\, discuss effective leadership styles for women and people in different cultures\, provide techniques and strategies for career advancement into leadership roles\, assist in developing and maintaining strong leadership networks. The session includes presentations by the facilitator\, small group discussions and experiential learning. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\n\n\nThis Special Dean’s Distinguished Lecture will host a film screening and panel discussion of “Picture a Scientist”. It is a feature length documentary chronicling the researchers who reveal their own experiences with gender and race discrimination with the goal of enhancing awareness of gender bias and revolutionizing the culture of science. The film challenges audiences of all backgrounds and genders to question their own implicit biases and consider how to change them. \n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\nDunlop School panelists who will lead the discussion after the film: \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n4:00 PM – Welcome; screening of the film Picture a Scientist \n\n\n\n5:40 PM – Panel discussion with audience participation \n\n\n\n6:15 PM –  One hour Reception in lobby.
