Based at the University of California\, Irvine\, RIRC labs are equipped and staffed to allow cutting edge research at multiple levels ranging from stem cells to robotic retraining to promote functional recovery. RIRC scientists were amongst the first to test the potential of stem cells for spinal cord injury therapy\, and research by RIRC scientists formed the basis for the first two clinical trials testing stem cell therapies in people with spinal cord injuries.

McGaugh Chair in Neurobiology of Learning and MemoryProfessor\, Neurobiology and BehaviorDirector\, Facility for Imaging and Brain Research (FIBRE)Director\, Campus Center for Neuroimaging (CCNI)UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences \n\n\n\nWhy Does Our Memory Decline With Age\n\n\n\n(and can we do anything about it)?\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \n\n\n\nMemory complaints are the most common cognitive concern of individuals as they age\, and it’s no wonder people are worried about it. Problems with memory are a hallmark feature of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. That being said\, occasional memory lapses are normal\, even when we’re young. However\, lapses in memory become more common as we age\, even when there are no clinical signs of dementia. \n\n\n\nIn his lecture\, Professor Stark will cover his laboratory’s research into these age-related changes and how we can use sophisticated brain imaging and behavioral techniques to study the effects of aging on our memory. A question naturally arises from this work: Can we do anything to slow or reverse these changes? In the second part of his presentation\, Professor Stark will describe recent efforts made in his lab to adapt rodent studies on “environmental enrichment” to humans. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 30\, 2019\, 4:00 PMCrystal Cove Auditorium\, UC Irvine Student Center\n\n\n\nReception to follow the Lecture at 5:00 PM\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecently the zebrafish\, a small freshwater fish commonly found in your home aquarium\, has emerged as a powerful new gene discovery and disease model system. Much of what we know about human genes and their role in health and disease has come from research using small animals as model systems. This is possible because two-thirds or more of our genes are similar in structure and function to genes in a fly or a fish. Professor Schilling will discuss how his lab has used zebrafish to study musculoskeletal development\, including genetic causes of birth defects such as cleft palate and muscular dystrophy. He will also discuss how this work has led to insights into the basic biology of cartilage\, bone and tendon development. These include how cells choose to become one of these cell types and how defects in these processes can lead to disease states. Joyner\, M.D.\nFrank & Shari Caywood ProfessorDepartment of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine \nMayo Clinic\nIn this talk Dr. Joyner will critique the widely pitched “genomics is transforming medicine” narrative.  To do this\, he will review the false promise that the Human Genome Project would lead to a “genetic revolution in medicine” – now called Precision Medicine.  Dr. Joyner will document how this narrative has underperformed\, explain why it has underperformed and show that a “genomic bubble” has now emerged and been amplified by buzzwords like big data\, machine learning and artificial intelligence.  This discussion will serve as a template to highlight key biological principles that are overlooked when too much focus is aimed at genes.  The twin problems of hype and the limits of big science will also be reviewed.  He will close by asking “what problem” are we trying to solve\, and suggest some approaches that are likely to be far more effective than those stemming from the gene centric world view that now dominates the biomedical landscape. \nReservations are requested.Refreshments will be served at the reception following the lecture.\nSeats 350. DESCRIPTION:Catching Your Breath:\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture \n\n\n\nEverytime you breathe in\, you inhale fungal spores. These spores are so tiny that they can travel on the wind for hundreds of miles. In fact\, it’s one way that fungi move around. Most spores won’t hurt you\, but some can cause a pneumonia-like disease called valley fever. Valley fever has recently become a “silent epidemic” in Central California\,  Arizona\, and other areas with hot and dry climates. Could climate change help valley fever fungi move to new places like Southern California? We are studying the link between valley fever fungi and climate to answer this question. Moreover\, we are developing early warning systems in the U.S. and Mexico for valley fever. Hughes\, Ph.D.\nChair and ProfessorMolecular Biology and BiochemistryUniversity of California\, Irvine \nWednesday\, February 20\, 2019 • 4:00 PMCrystal Cove Auditorium\, UC Irvine Student Center\nReception to follow the lecture at 5:00 PM \n  \nAbout the LectureIdentifying effective new medicines is time-consuming and expensive. Ideally\, drugs are highly specific\, having great efficacy and minimal toxicity\, however this is rarely the case. Current drug pipelines follow very similar trajectories: simple cell-based assays reveal promising compounds that are then tested in mice\, and\, if these studies are successful\, lead agents progress into first-in-man studies\, and finally full-scale clinical trials. Unfortunately\, fewer than 1 in 7 drugs entering clinical trials make it to market. Two major problems with this pipeline can be identified: the cell-based assays are too simple\, not reproducing the complexity of cells in the body; and mice are not men – mouse metabolism and drug sensitivities are often very different to our own. \nBody-on-a-Chip technology aims to solve these problems. Three-dimensional “mini-organs” can be created in the lab that better model how cells behave in the body\, and human cells can be used to capture human-specific responses. Numerous studies have now shown that these systems can perform better in modeling how drugs behave in people than both traditional cell-based assays and mouse testing. Moving from the lab to the clinic\, we are now taking tumors from cancer patients and growing them in these platforms. Our long-term goal is to use this technology to identify the optimal combination of drugs to treat each individual patient – truly personalized medicine. Dr. Hughes is a world leader in the field of microphysiological systems (body-on-a-chip) technology and will describe how these revolutionary models are set to change how drugs are discovered\, tested and prescribed. \nReservations are requested.Refreshments will be served at the receptionfollowing the lecture.\nThe event is open to the public and the UCI campus community.Parking is available for $10 per vehicle at the UCI Student Center Parking Structure. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 16\, 11:00am \n\n\n\nHerklotz Conference Center \n\n\n\n“Radiation- and chemotherapy-induced cognitive dysfunction: Causes\, consequences and treatments”\n\n\n\nCharles Limoli\, PhD \n\n\n\nProfessor of Radiation Oncology\, Department of Radiation Oncology\, UCI \n\n\n\nExposure of the CNS to treatments used to control the advance of cancer has been known to compromise cognitive function. Depending on disease state\, treatments specifics and socioeconomic factors\, cognitive outcomes vary in onset and severity. With increasing numbers of cancer patients surviving long-term\, cognitive health is becoming an increasing concern\, and to date\, no satisfactory treatments exist for ameliorating the progressive and often debilitating cognitive side effects caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This talk will cover the various mechanisms underlying treatment associated cognitive dysfunction and discuss the potential of using stem cell based strategies for the long-term treatment of this serious unmet medical need. \n\n\n\nAll colloquia are held in the Dale Melbourne Herklotz Conference Center\, CNLM. \n\n\n\nThe CNLM Colloquium Series is supported by an endowment from the Thomas Henry Curtis Funds.

SUMMARY:In the Light of Evolution VII: The Human Mental Machinery
DESCRIPTION:Organizers: Camilo J. Cela-Conde\, Raul Gutierrez Lombardo and John C. AviseCo-sponsored by the Centro de Estudios Filosoficos Politicos y Sociales Vicente Lombardo Toledano \n\n\n\nScholars consider a comment in Charles Darwin’s Notebook C to be one of his first insights into human nature. As Darwin noted\, our mental machinery makes us different. For instance\, it allows us to ask about ourselves\, about what a human is. It allows us to question what we are and the meaning of the way we are. One thing we have discovered is that humans possess certain unique mental traits. Ethic and aesthetic values are among them\, and they constitute an essential part of what we call the human condition. This Colloquium brings together leading scientists who have worked on several aspects of human morals and aesthetics considered as mental traits\, their evolution\, and their relationship to related behaviors in other primates. \n\n\n\nRegistration Fee: $150.00Reduced Registration Fee for Graduate Students and Postdocs: $100.00 \n\n\n\nRegistration is limited and will be accepted online only when the registration fee is included and in the order in which it is received. The registration fee includes breakfast and lunch on Friday and Saturday and transportation from the Marriott Newport Beach Hotel to the Beckman Center.
