UCI’s Environmental Collaboratory (EnCo, consisting of the Center for Environmental Biology, UCI NATURE, and Masters in Conservation and Restoration Science) and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology invite applications for a full-time field researcher in the Junior Specialist series. We seek highly motivated applicants to conduct ecological research with a focus on vegetation monitoring in the Nature Reserve of Orange County in Southern California. Environmental Collaboratory staff conduct annual monitoring to assess the biological integrity of oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, grassland, and chaparral communities across the reserve. Additional projects conducted by EnCo include experiments developed with Center for Environmental biology undergraduate interns assessing the effectiveness of conservation and restoration activities.
The successful applicant will support field research by generating datasheets, using GPS to locate monitoring locations, accurately identify native plants, supervise undergraduate interns, maintain the CEB website, and supervise data entry and storage. The position also involves coordination with academic researchers and staff as well as partner organizations, including other universities. Duties will include troubleshooting field equipment and technical problems, carrying out experimental protocols, accessing study sites, and assisting project personnel with student groups, data acquisition, and field site access.
QUALIFICATIONS: At least one year of experience with ecological field research; strong organizational, teamwork, and communication skills; familiarity with California plant species; capacity to work full days outdoors under field conditions on a routine basis; commitment to promoting field safety and best practices; valid driver’s license. Desirable qualifications also include: Experience with operating and maintaining scientific equipment; knowledge of ecological field survey techniques; experience with data management and coding in R; experience with GIS or other mapping software; prior participation in ecological research and restoration projects.
