Postdoctoral scholar positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Anthony Long at University of California, Irvine.

Areas of research: 1) Genomics and Bioinformatics related to the Drosophila Synthetic Population Resource (DSPR), 2) Experimental evolution in sexual outbred yeast, 3) A heterogeneous stock paradigm for dissecting complex traits in Peromyscus leucopus a major host of Lyme disease.

Description of duties: Take advantage of the intellectual environment here at UCI in concert with the data we are collecting to establish yourself as an independent investigator. We are carrying out large-scale RNAseq & ATACseq experiments and assembling de novo (PACBIO) genomes for DSPR flies. Our goal is to leverage these data in order to allow investigators using the DSPR to routinely move from QTL mapped to cM sized intervals to candidate causative polymorphisms (and perhaps structural variants). We are experimentally evolving 384 populations of sexual outbred yeast to address the question of how evolution happens at the molecular level in outbred sexuals. We have a genome assembly for Peromyscus leucopus and are phenotyping mice from a 30 year old multi-parent colony for traits related to their ability to serve as a host for Borrelia and other pathogens. Colony mice have patterns of LD and haplotype variation that in many ways makes them look like DSPR flies (or collaborative cross mice). We hypothesize the unique properties of this population will allow us to map host property QTL to sub centimorgan scales.

Required qualifications include a recent PhD in evolution, genetics, bioinformatics or a related field. The ideal candidate would have a background in population/quantitative/statistical genetics with an ability to work with big data. Consideration will be given to any motivated applicant interested in evolutionary genomics. A first author publication demonstrating your ability to carry a project from conception to completion is likely a pre-requisite for success.

Qualified candidates should submit curriculum vitae, the names and contact info of three references, and a cover letter explaining the candidate’s interest in the position and overall research aims and accomplishments to the following on-line recruitment URL:
