The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California, Irvine is looking to immediately fill one part-time opening in the Specialist Series. Applications are sought from candidates with a B.S. or higher.

The main focus of this job is to perform protein production using an E. coli recombinant expression system in a Structural Biology laboratory. The applicants should have basic knowledge in Molecular Biology and Protein Chemistry. The work will include plasmid DNA manipulation, prepare and maintain E. coli competent cells, transformation of E. coli cells, protein expression in E. coli cell culture, and column chromatographic procedures for protein purification. Purified protein will be characterized by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), UV-visible spectrophotometry, and enzyme activity assay. Purified protein samples will be used by other lab members for enzyme-inhibitor interaction studies and structure determination by x-ray crystallography.
