“APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B: Mutagenic Fuel for Cancer Evolution”

Abstract: The Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) proteins promote the deamination of cytosine to uracil in DNA or RNA. APOBEC enzymes serve as essential components of the immune system, acting as defense mechanisms against DNA or RNA viruses and transposons by inducing mutations. However, APOBEC proteins are also one of the predominant causes of genomic mutations in cancer. Indeed, cancer-focused genomic studies have identified APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B-associated mutations in >70% of cancer types. Herein, we will reveal the mechanism by which APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B generate mutation in cancer genomes.
