Inaugural Global Sustainability Poster Session at UCI

April 29, 2015

global poster session 3 Dr. Jessica Pratt, Lecturer in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, held the first-ever Global Sustainability Poster Session in Founder’s Court last month. The event attracted more than 50 attendees including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, administrative staff, and sustainability leaders from campus operations.

“This poster session was an innovative way to get students to fulfill one of our course objectives- communicate scientific knowledge to an audience – in a way that could also impact the UCI community and give students a more valuable real world experience,” shared Dr. Pratt.

Students participating in this poster session provided positive feedback on their experience. Nicole Larson, Global Sustainability student and author of the grant, which secured funding for the poster session, said, “Before this, I had never taken a course that directly encouraged us, as students, to extend our curriculum beyond the classroom in a way that also enriched our campus community.”

David Kerr, a Global Sustainability student added, “Traditional methods only allow for a handful of students to learn and engage the broader issues, while engaging community helps to show the spectrum of the issues and how it will take individual activism to shape our future.”

The poster session was sponsored by The Green Initiative Fund and Event Services with support from the UCI Sustainability Initiative and Global Sustainability Resource Center.
