Research Facilities

The UCI School of Biological Sciences research facilities include the following locations available for faculty use. Please contact each one directly for more information.

Bio Cluster

The School of Biological Sciences owns a High Performance Computing Cluster that includes a 700-core Opteron cluster with 400 Tb of disk space for use of the Biological Sciences faculty and students to supplement the computational pipelines of the Institute of Genomics and Bioinformatics, which handles primary read mapping. Faculty with additional needs can contribute new core nodes and storage space, which can be connected to the computer cluster via an infiniBand switch. The additional storage space is then dedicated specifically to the lab contributing and the queuing system gives first priority to access on the cores nodes you contributed with access to the additional hundreds of cores when idle.

Biomolecular Spectrometry Facility

The 800 MHz NMR spectrometer (1394 Natural Sciences I) can detect proton, carbon and nitrogen signals and is equipped with hardware optimized for biomolecular applications.  The Biacore 300 instrument (1304 Natural Sciences I) can measure docking interactions and binding affinity between biomolecules.

Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry Facility

The UC Irvine IRMS Facility in the School of Physical Sciences houses a variety of instrumentation to prepare and analyze gases, organic matter, inorganic samples, and water for stable isotope analysis. The five IRMS at UC Irvine measure stable isotope ratios of the light elements: Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Hydrogen.

Laboratory for Electron and X-ray Instrumentation (LEXI)

LEXI is a university-wide shared user facility focusing on electron microscopy and X-ray analysis, and has several instruments applicable to biologist. The FEI Quanta 3D SEM is a state-of-the-art dual-beam SEM/FIB and may be operated under different vacuum modes, for example, high vacuum, low vacuum and environmental (ESEM). The Rigaku SmartLab X-ray Diffractometer and the Rigaku Ultima III X-ray Powder Diffractometer both have small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) capabilities for structural biology analysis.

Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics (LFD)

The Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics (LFD) occupies an approximately 8000 sq. ft. facility at the Biomedical Engineering Department in the interdisciplinary Natural Sciences II building of the University of California, Irvine. It maintains a state-of-the-art laboratory for fluorescence measurements with resources for spectroscopy, microscopy, biochemistry, cell culture, and data analysis.

Mass Spectrometry Facility, Department of Chemistry

The Mass Spectrometry Facility has multiple instruments applicable to biological applications. LC-ESI-MS (TOF and QqQ) and GC-MS are available in Open Access format for small molecule analysis, e.g., for identification and quantification of drugs and endogenous compounds. Protein analysis and identification is offered using nano-LC-MS/MS and MALDI-TOF (the latter also Open Access).

The Optical Biology Center (OBC) Shared Resource Facility provides researchers with access to state-of-the-art microscopes, training and and technical support.

Stem Cell Core Facility

The Stem Cell Core Facility,  a key component of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center provides stem cell technology and resources to the UCI, Orange County and Southern California research communities. These include developmental and molecular genetics, cell culture and cell sorting, imaging, high-throughput platforms, and bioinformatics.

Transgenic Mouse Facility

The Transgenic Mouse Facility (TMF) provides services on a recharge basis for making, breeding, genotyping, importing, and preserving genetically-modified mice and embryonic stem cells for UC Irvine investigators.

UCI Genomics High-Throughput Facility

The mission of the UCI Genomics High-Throughput Facility (GHTF) is to provide genome-wide analysis for clients interested in gene expression, regulation of gene expression, and genome sequence and variation. Clients include academic, non-profit institutions and commercial biotech entities.
